// About

A trade,
not a charity.

WTF! is Digital Canaries' Work To Film program. You bring hours. We bring a soundstage. The exchange is direct, the math is plain, and nobody's doing anyone a favour.

// Origin

We had a problem.
So did filmmakers.

Building a studio is constant. Sets to dress. Walls to paint. Floors to strike. Inventory to tag. The work doesn't stop, and the labour cost is real.

At the same time we kept meeting filmmakers — students, indies, content creators with real ideas — who couldn't afford a single shoot day at a real studio. The script was there. The day rate wasn't.

So we built a trade. Hours of build for hours of stage. The studio gets the help it actually needs. The filmmaker gets the day they couldn't otherwise afford. Nobody's working for free, nobody's renting on credit.

It's not new — work-trade is the oldest economy on earth. We just put a ledger and a contract behind it.

// How the math works

One hour of build
= forty dollars of studio.

$40

PER HOUR OF BUILD

$4,000

PER SHOOT DAY

100h

= ONE FREE SHOOT DAY

Skilled trades earn 1.5×. Credit lasts 12 months. Every shift signed off by the supervisor on duty.

// How we got here

The trade, in stages.

  1. 2024 — IDEA

    A back-of-the-napkin trade.

    Sketched out at a build-day in November. Our painter was complaining we never had enough hands. A film student walked by and asked how much a soundstage day cost. The math did itself in the next twenty minutes.

  2. 2025 Q1 — PILOT

    Three filmmakers. Twelve weeks.

    Took on three willing volunteers to test the rules. They each banked 80–120 hours over three months, then booked their shoot days. Two finished their shorts on the day they earned. One's still editing.

  3. 2025 Q3 — REWRITE

    Wrote the contract.

    Pulled lessons from the pilot into a clean trade agreement. Defined what counts, the conversion rate, the credit lifetime, the no-show forfeit, the booking rules. Plain language, signed off by lawyers, posted publicly.

  4. 2026 — PROGRAM

    Open application.

    Public application opens. Capacity for 30 active members at a time. Supervisor-signed ledgers digital from day one. The first wall of WTF! films starts filling.

  5. NEXT

    Yours.

    The next chapter is whatever you film with the day you earn.

// Who's behind it

Built by the people
who'll be on the floor with you.

Digital Canaries is a working film studio. Our team has built sets for features, episodic, commercials, music videos, and indie shorts going back over a decade. WTF! isn't a hands-off internship program — the supervisor signing your shift might be the same person framing the next director's debut. Show up, do the work, you're in the room.
